Birthday Celebrations for Janu the African Elephant
11th Jul 2024
This week we celebrated Janu's 19th Birthday at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm!
Born in July 2005, Janu moved to Noah's Ark Zoo Farm in 2014 from Port Lympne in Kent and was born at Howletts in Kent. Janu is the largest bull at present and easily recognisable as he only has one short tusk.
To celebrate the occasion, the elephant team made a giant ice lolly for Janu to enjoy. The ice lolly was roughly the size of a dustbin, and consisted of Janu's favourite flavours. This included carrot, orange and blackcurrant.
Janu calls Elephant Eden his home, with 3 Elephants called Shaka, Sutton, Uli and Sutton. The habitat is the largest in the U.K, and has its own swimming pool, heated indoor barn, sand yards, expansive fields and large willow plantation.
The facility provides a much-needed support for the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for African elephants, offering an extensive environment for individual males to live and integrate into a multi-generational group where they can learn from each other and exhibit natural behaviours. Habitats like Elephant Eden are crucial to the successful and healthy management of African elephants as a part of the wider zoo community, in recognition of the differing social and spatial needs of male and females.
Did you know that the African elephant is the largest animal walking on earth? Found in 37 African countries, they are majestic creatures, easily distinguished by their large ears and trunk.
