Celebrating World Earth Day at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm 🌍

22nd Apr 2025

At Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, every day is Earth Day—but today, we’re shining a special spotlight on our efforts to care for the planet and all the incredible creatures that call it home. From our African elephant habitat, which is the largest in the UK spanning 20 acres, to the mob of meerkats and the native species right on our doorstep, we're committed to conservation, sustainability, and making a meaningful difference for wildlife—locally and globally.

Pumpkins, Poo & Purpose

We’ve already planted 6,800 pumpkins this year—our biggest harvest in the making! Not only do they make for fun seasonal displays, but they also provide natural enrichment for many of our animals. This annual tradition grows each year, and our secret ingredient is animal poo! Specifically, Rhino and Elephant poo!

We also sell locally sourced, characterful Christmas trees through our Farm Shop. Just like the movement to embrace ‘wonky’ veg, our perfectly imperfect trees offer a sustainable twist on a festive tradition.

Sustainable from the Ground Up

  • Energy: Nearly half of our energy comes from renewable sources including our wind turbine, solar panels, and biomass boilers.
  • Water: Rainwater harvesting helps power our pools and streams, with recycled water flowing through several habitats.
  • Waste: Around 95% of our on-site waste is recycled—we’re working hard to keep landfill use to a minimum.

Partnering with Geneco for a Greener Zoo

We’re proud to celebrate our partnership with Geneco – champions of sustainable waste and energy solutions. Together, we’re working to reduce our environmental impact, from cutting food waste to exploring greener energy options. With nearly half of our energy already coming from on-site renewables, collaborations like this help us go even further for wildlife and the planet.

Greener Choices

Our café and farm shop use compostable, plant-based packaging, and we’ve cut down plastic straw use significantly. We’re also proud to support local suppliers—reducing food miles and single-use plastics wherever possible.

🐾 Enriching animals, Supporting Local

Our keepers are passionate about sustainable enrichment. By repurposing waste from local businesses—like Christmas trees, coffee sacks, and carpet tubes—they enhance our animals’ lives while reducing environmental impact and helping businesses save on waste costs.

🌳 Conservation in Action

Our commitment goes beyond daily operations. Volunteers recently helped plant willow saplings in our spacious Elephant habitat, creating a richer environment for both animals and native wildlife. From elephant care to nest box installations and tree planting by our grounds team, conservation is a living, breathing part of life at the zoo.
