Kojo and Tau Celebrate their Sixth Birthday at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm

20th Aug 2024

Our pride of lions is made up of mum Arusha, and her two cubs Kojo and Tau, and this week is an exciting week for them. They are all celebrating their birthdays!

Today, on the 20th of August, Kojo and Tau are celebrating their 6th birthday!

Celebrating these birthdays is not just about recognising these incredible animals, but also about raising awareness for the conservation efforts that protect lions in the wild. We hope you’ll join us in honouring Kojo and Tau and contribute to the ongoing support of these magnificent creatures.

Over the last 6 years, our pride of lions have formed a close bond and member has a big personality and place in the pack.

Get to Know Kojo and Tau

Kojo and Tau were born on 20th August in 2018. The cubs were initially separated from their dad Masai to enable them to develop a close bond with their mother Arusha. The pair were the first African lion cubs to be born in the UK for three years. The reintroduction was a success and Masai greeted Arusha, and the cubs enjoyed chasing Masai! For the last six years, our pride of lions have formed an inseparable bond.

What do our keepers say?

We asked our Big Cat keepers what they had to say about our three lions...

Can you tell us a bit about the mum of the group?

Our eldest lion, and smallest as she is a female and the mother of Kojo and Tau. She can be a weary of new people or situations! She is our most vocal lion, so if you ever hear any grumbles or growls, it's usually from her. When the sun starts to set and the lions call, it's usually Arusha who starts it!

What about Kojo?

Kojo - Our largest lion. He is also our most confident lion and he is extremely food motivated! He has a very bold personality, but when the tough gets going, you do often see him back down. However, when food is around, Kojo is definitely in charge!

How would you describe Tau?

Tau - our most timid lion, the medium sized one. Tau doesn't really like big crowds of people and gets spooked quite easily. He is the definition of 'scaredy cat' but he is very sweet natured to the other lions. He likes to stay out of trouble! When working with Tau you need a lot of patience and to do things on Tau's terms. However, once he trusts you and knows you, he can really surprise you! He is pretty intelligent too.
