Meet Our New Arrivals: Critically Endangered Red Ruffed Lemurs at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm
11th Feb 2025
Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm is delighted to welcome two new arrivals—Benji and Pika, a pair of critically endangered red ruffed lemurs! These striking primates have settled into their new home at the zoo, and we can't wait for you to meet them.
How to spot them?
Red ruffed lemurs are known for their vibrant rusty-red fur, contrasted by black markings on their arms, legs, and tails, along with a distinctive white patch on the back of their heads. Their striking appearance makes them very eye-catching.
But before you see Benji and Pika, you might just hear them first! These vocal primates have an impressive range of calls, including growls, grunts, and even loud screams. They use their voices to communicate with each other, mark their territory, and warn of potential threats—so listen out for their calls as you explore the zoo!
Why are they Critically Endangered?
Native to the rainforests of Madagascar, red ruffed lemurs are classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Habitat destruction, hunting, and trapping have placed these animals at serious risk. Their numbers continue to decline due to deforestation and human activity, making conservation efforts more important than ever.
At Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, we are committed to providing a safe and enriching environment for Benji and Pika while raising awareness about the challenges facing their species in the wild. By visiting the zoo, you are supporting conservation efforts that help protect endangered species like the red ruffed lemur.
Come and meet Benji and Pika on your next visit, and learn more about these remarkable primates and the work being done to safeguard their future!
