Renovations Underway for Lion Habitat of Arusha, Kojo, and Tau

15th Nov 2024

If you've visited recently, you may have noticed some construction in the West section of our zoo, with temporary fencing and paths redirected around the big cat fields. Rest assured—these upgrades are all part of our ongoing commitment to animal welfare and conservation, with exciting improvements underway for our pride of lions, Arusha, Kojo, and Tau.

Enhancing Animal Welfare

Built 15 years ago, our big cat habitat has served us well, but it’s now time to enhance and update the space to keep for our lions. This renovation gives us the perfect opportunity to improve not only the physical space but also to introduce new and enriching elements. Our goal? To create an environment where our lions have more room to roam, explore, and exhibit natural behaviors. From new climbing structures to varied hiding spots, every detail is carefully designed to prioritise their well-being with the welfare being at the heart of this exciting project.

An Eco-Friendly Build

At Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, we’re committed to building sustainably. This project will include eco-friendly materials like FSC-certified timber and carefully selected stones from local quarries, keeping our environmental impact low. We’re passionate about reducing our carbon footprint and are proud that these improvements align with our green practices.

Educational Opportunities and Conservation Connection

This renovation is more than a habitat upgrade—it’s a new opportunity for visitors to learn about African lions and their unique behaviours. We’re adding fresh interpretation opportunities and interactive signage, allowing guests to dive deeper into the lives of Arusha, Kojo, and Tau who are ambassadors for their wild counterparts. Our goal is to inspire a connection to these magnificent animals and highlight the importance of global conservation efforts.

Visiting While We Build

You can still catch glimpses of our lions while the work continues, with outdoor viewing areas to the left of the main habitat and window viewing when the lions are indoors. Arusha, Kojo, and Tau remain as majestic as ever enjoying the additional enrichment from their keepers and they will be exploring their enhanced space soon.

The new and improved lion habitat will be ready in spring 2025. Follow us on social media or check our website for updates, photos, and sneak peeks of the progress. Thank you for your support as we work to create the best possible home for our lions!
