Somerset Day at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm

Monday next week (May 11th) is Somerset Day, a celebration of everything that’s special about the county of Somerset. The date was chosen by an online poll, and marks the date in 878 AD when Alfred the Great gathered the people of Somerset to defeat the Viking invaders in battle. King Alfred and the Vikings may be long gone, but there’s still so much to get excited about in the county today. The Somerset Day celebration was the brainchild of the Passion for Somerset group. Its spokesman John Turner explained that the county deserved its own day as it would help to “get the message out that Somerset has something really, really special”. We couldn’t agree more, and we’re proud to be one of the leading family attractions in Somerset. Noah’s Ark is a long-standing member of the Somerset Tourism Association and a winner of North Somerset’s Top Visitor Attraction award.
It goes without saying that a visit to Noah’s Ark is a must for any visitor to Somerset, but there are also a wealth of other sights for tourists to enjoy in the county. You can see the grandeur and opulence of Victorian architecture in Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier and the Tyntesfield stately home (just a few minutes from Noah’s Ark), and for the more adventurous types, there’s also the caves at Wookey Hole to be explored and Oakham Treasures in Portbury giving a taste of Somerset life and history. As well as celebrating the county’s many unique attractions, Somerset Day will also shine a spotlight on its great agricultural heritage.
Farming has been integral to Somerset’s history, and it has also played a big part in the Noah’s Ark story over the years. Noah’s Ark is built on the site of Moat House Farm, with a farmhouse dating back to the 17th century. Since beginning life as a dairy farm, Noah’s Ark has grown over several decades to become one of the South West’s leading attractions, and home to some of the world’s most amazing and exotic animals. We’ve never lost touch with our farming origins though, and we offer visitors the opportunity to get up close to a wide variety of farm animals – pigs, goats, cows and more!
