Vulture Awareness Day 2024 at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm

This Saturday, September 7th, Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm is proud to join wildlife organizations around the globe in celebrating Vulture Awareness Day! Vultures are often misunderstood creatures, yet they play a crucial role in maintaining the health of our ecosystems. Join us as we shine a light on these fascinating birds and learn why they’re so vital to the natural world.

Zoe Cropper, our Lead Bird and Reptile keeper, said “We as zoo keepers and educators have a responsibility to be the voice for these critically endangered birds. We also hope to play a role in the conservation of white headed vultures, by breeding in the future. They only lay one egg per year so it's a huge responsibility on the birds and us.”

Our Birds and Reptile Keeper, Elizabeth, said, “Vultures are such wonderfully diverse and interesting birds. They are a keystone species we, quite literally, can’t live without.

The catastrophic decline of the majority of vulture species is nothing short of a tragedy which, unfortunately, many people aren’t even aware is happening. Vultures are devoted to their partners and chicks, are very curious and have so much charisma when you look past the unconventional appearance.

Working with our White-Headed Vultures has been nothing but a privilege. Being able to educate about the plight of vultures; hopefully changing some perceptions for the better and spending so much time working with such a rare species is always fantastic!

Days like International Vulture Awareness Day bring this unusual group of birds to the forefront and allow us to highlight the challenges they face. A whole day dedicated to Vultures; what more could you want!”

Why Vultures Are Vital to Our Ecosystem

Vultures might not be the first animals that come to mind when you think of majestic wildlife, but they are truly nature’s clean-up crew. These birds are scavengers, feeding primarily on the remains of dead animals. This might sound unpleasant, but it’s a critical ecological service. Vultures help prevent the spread of diseases such as rabies and anthrax, which can occur when dead animals are left to decay.

The Plight of the Vulture

Despite their importance, vulture populations are under severe threat. Many species are endangered, with some facing the very real possibility of extinction. The primary causes of their decline include poisoning (both accidental and intentional), habitat loss, and the illegal wildlife trade. In some regions, the decline in vulture numbers has led to an increase in the population of feral dogs and rats, which in turn spreads diseases more easily among humans and other animals.

At Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, we’re committed to raising awareness about the challenges vultures face and what can be done to help. As part of our conservation efforts, we’re proud to support initiatives that protect vulture habitats and educate the public on their importance.
