Welcome, Oakley! A New Arrival in Our Rare Breeds Program

29th Oct 2024

We are thrilled to introduce the latest addition to our Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm family—a British White calf named Oakley! Born this month, Oakley joins our small group of rare breed cows, each with a special place in our breeding program dedicated to preserving these unique animals.

Meet Oakley, Our British White Calf

British White cattle are a rare and distinctive breed. Known for their mostly white coat, black noses, and ears, these cows are not only beautiful but also have a rich heritage. Oakley, with his curious nature and distinctive markings, is sure to capture the hearts of visitors.

A Rare Breed with a Rich History

British White cows have been kept across the UK for their meat and milk, contributing to farming traditions for centuries. Cows were first domesticated thousands of years ago and have since been a vital part of human agriculture. As ruminants, they have a highly effective digestive system, which allows them to extract the maximum nutrition from their food. At Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, we celebrate this incredible breed through our commitment to conservation, helping to ensure their survival for future generations.

Championing Native Conservation

At Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, we have a strong focus on native conservation, including the conservation of native farm animals. In 2022, we proudly received our Rare Breeds Survival Trust accreditation, recognizing our efforts in this important area. The Rare Farm Breeds program at Noah’s Ark aims to support the survival of rare British farm animals, ensuring their preservation for future generations. Oakley’s birth is a testament to our ongoing dedication to this mission.

Like all our British White cattle, Oakley will enjoy a diet rich in grass during the summer months. In winter, when fresh grass is scarce, the herd is fed silage—preserved grass—to keep them healthy and well-nourished. Farmers also occasionally supplement their diet with cereals and corn, ensuring a balanced menu throughout the year.

A New Chapter in Our Rare Breeds Journey

Oakley’s arrival marks an exciting new chapter in our rare breeds program. Oakley will grow up surrounded by his family, helping us continue our mission to celebrate and protect these animals.

Eleanor Steeds, Farm Section team leader says, “He’s a lovely addition to our rare breeds programme and the team are loving watching him bounce around the barn, he currently hasn’t got a strong latch and this is why the team are assisted feeding him at the moment, all other aspects of his development are going great!”

We hope you’ll join us in welcoming Oakley on your next visit to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm! Come and see him exploring his new home, and learn more about our efforts to preserve rare breeds for the future.
